What are the limits of knowing celiac disease prevalence worldwide?
There are several limiting factors that make it harder for researchers to provide exact statistics on how common celiac disease is throughout each country’s population. These include, but are not limited to:
Differing methods of checking for celiac prevalence in the population, such as positive blood test results, the presence of celiac genes or biopsy-confirmed diagnoses.
Differing risk levels within one country or region depending on regional diets, other chronic illnesses (like diabetes), etc.
How often celiac disease goes undiagnosed in general.
Recent Studies on Celiac Disease Prevalence Around the World:
With those limitations in mind, some of the celiac population percentages researchers have established within the last 10 years include:
1% of people in the United States
1.6% of people in Italy
2.0% of people in Norway
2.4% of people in Finland
0.46-0.64% of people in Latin America
1% of people in the UK
Ranges from 0.14% to 1.17% in low risk areas and from 2.4% to 44% in high risk areas of the Middle East & North Africa
